What makes this book interesting is that it was written close to the lifetime of Crockett himself, and uses generous excepts from Crockett's own journal. In this way we get a clear picture of the way life really was in the period of 1800-36 for people settling the near West beyond the Appalachians. A portrait of Crockett himself emerges strongly in these pages, of a fine backwoods hunter and horseman who had some experience in the Creek Indian Wars and a strong moral compass. He also was a likable man who became something of a politician and may even have fancied himself a possible candidate for President. His opposition to Andrew Jackson's Indian Relocation Act of 1830 cost him any chance of furthering his political ambitions, and so he headed for Texas. Interesting book. The "Davy" Crockett that many may remember from the early TV days is not necessarily debunked, but certainly fleshed out. The writer appears to be quite objective recounting Mr. Crockett's strengths and foibles.
Enjoyable book, tracing the history of the American nation, how the nation expanded and be came "civilized". All of these improvements for the masses came because of a few who dared leave the comfort of the familiar.
Written in the late 1800's, this book is written in a style that includes more editorial/personal commentary than one will typically see in a modern history book. But even that gives the reader insight into the history of the day. The book quotes heavily from Crockett's autobiography.
This was written about 150 years ago and as such does not read like a modern work, but the information contained on the personal life of such a well-known historical figure makes it a worth while read. Paragraphs from his autobiography are liberally used. The one thing I would like to know more about is how and why he left his family to go to Texas. The book leaves one with the impression that it was pretty much wanderlust. Not flattering for someone with his reputation.
It was actually fun reading extracts of Davy Crocket's unique and witty comments. The backwoods language of the day made reading this more realistic. This book portrayed Crockett as a human with human frailties but at the same time lets the reader know he was a rough and tumble woodsman who was a hero to the people. The only thing that parallels the TV Dave Crockett and the Dave Crockett in the book was the ending at the Alamo.
Abbott has done another good job of helping tell the story of another great man. Davey Crockett, the King of the Wild Fronteir was a television story from my childhood. I can still sing the song. This book had enough but not all the stories that had remembered hearing as a young man. It told some adventures of Davey as a young man pressed into adulthood by family needs that he was willing and able to meet. I would now like to read more about Davey Crockett
After visiting the Alamo this past March I decided to read a little about this Icon of American folklore. I grew with movies and television history and decided it was time to find out the truth about this man.
I really enjoyed this book. It shows how life was back in Crockett's day and what a different picture of that life than the one you get from Hollywood. Crockett was dirt poor as was life in his day for most. He didn't seem to mind living in one room stick huts with dirt floors. Some of these homes being occupied by 8 or more men, women and children. This was early America, not the stereotypical view we get from the movies.
I found it interesting that the author never used the names of any of Crocketts immediate family - wife and children. It was as if they were either unknown to the author or didn't seem to matter. It was like that with many of the characters in that Crockett knew - the "pirate", the "bee-hunter". I also found it interesting remembering the last Hollywood depiction of Crockett as somewhat of a coward. Here's a man who hunts bear, killing some with his knife and wanders around Tennessee alone and in the company of wild Indians. I can't imagine him being cowardly. Anyway, this is a good book and an easy and enjoyable read and, best of all, if you have a kindle, it's free.
I grew up a fan of Walt Disney's Davy Crocket movies and I read Davy Crockett His Own Story in college to compare the history with the legend. I would have stopped at the autobio if it weren't for offering all of these older and harder to find titles. It's a straightforward telling of Davy's life story and I think more of an inspiration to the Disney film that Crockett's own work. And that surprised me in a pleasant way. Written in the late 1800s, this book deals with Davy the legend after the fire of his time but before the era of revisionist authors that look for every wart. It's one of the best books I have read about the harshness of life 200 years ago and how people took it for granted that peril was beyond every horizon.
